AI SEO vs. AI Visibility: What's the Difference?
By Shaeel Iqbal · September 24, 2026
Same space, too many names.
"AI SEO," "AEO" (answer engine optimization), "GEO" (generative engine optimization), "AI visibility" — you'll see all of these used for roughly the same underlying idea, and none of the naming has really settled yet. That's confusing, and it's made worse by "AI SEO" also getting used for a completely unrelated thing: AI-powered writing tools that help you produce SEO content faster.
A quick way to tell.
If you're looking for a tool that uses AI to help you write blog posts or optimize existing content faster — that's AI-assisted content tooling. That's not what Citefast does.
If you want to know whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity would actually recommend your business by name when someone asks a relevant question — and if not, what it takes to change that — that's AI visibility (also called GEO, AEO, or "AI SEO" in the sense we mean it). That's what Citefast does.

Why the distinction matters.
Traditional SEO optimizes for search engine rankings. AI visibility optimizes for how language models understand, trust, and cite your business when generating an answer. The two overlap, but they're not the same discipline — and most SEO agencies haven't caught up to that yet. Whichever term someone uses, the real question is whether AI already knows your business exists.
One concrete place to start.
Whatever you call it, one real, current technique is publishing an llms.txt file — a plain-text summary of your site written for AI models to read directly. Generate one for your site free.
